December 3, 2008: The NHL suspends Sean Avery for his "sloppy seconds" comment. John Tortorella had this to his say about Avery on TSN: "The league stepped up here and I think they did the right thing. Enough is enough. He's embarrassed himself, he's embarrassed the organization, he's embarrassed the league and he's embarrassed his teammates, who have to look out for him. Send him home. He doesn't belong in the league."
Fast forward to late February, 2009. The Rangers name Tortorella their new coach. Jump ahead to March, 2009. The Rangers season is on life support. They're desperate, so they claim Avery off of re-entry waivers. Listen to what Tortorella has to say a mere 3 months later about Avery. "I'm the first one to say that Sean makes his own bed with some of the things that happened, but I think he's done his penance here. All I want is, I hope he's given a fair shake."
It is truly amazing how much compassion and forgiveness John Tortorella has acquired in less than 100 days. God does, indeed, work in mysterious ways.
I realize this is not exactly hot off the press, but I had to start somewhere. I promise I'll try to be more current in the future. Perhaps I'll vent my frustrations over how the Russians and the IOC screwed us out of the Basketball Gold Medal in 1972.
